Dog meet up – A Year at UBC

A couple of weeks ago, I saw a Facebook event about a dog meet up that was happening in Vancouver, where people could bring their dogs and basically just have a massive doggy play date. People without dogs (i.e. people like myself), were also welcome. It sounded like a dog-lovers dream, so I immediately invited all my friends to come too. To my delight, the meet up was scheduled for the week that my friend was coming to visit, so we decided to go together, along with anyone else who wanted to come.

The meet-up started at 12, but not having dogs ourselves, we didn’t want to be too early so didn’t get there until about 2. It was taking place in a park over on the east side of Vancouver, and we could hear the barking for ages off. When we arrived at the place, there were more dogs there then I have ever seen in my whole life – all kinds of dogs too. A massive Great Dane, a couple of Dalmatians, a huge St Bernard as well as Bichons, tiny Yorkshire terriers, pugs, bulldogs and Shih Tzu’s. It was totally crazy and we didn’t know which dogs to look at and which ones to pet.

There was one dog, a Weimaraner I think, that was totally uninterested in its hundreds of potential playmates. The only thing worth its attention was for its owner to throw his ball into the lake, so that he could jump in and bring it back. This went on for the whole time we were there (a couple of hours), and was hysterical to watch.

This was the first event of its kind that I’ve seen – and now I’ve experienced it once, I’m desperate to experience it again! It was pretty much the best day of my life, so I hope that these events will stretch to Edinburgh as quickly as possible!
