Temperatures are lowering, the depth of the US obsession with pumpkins has become increasingly apparent and campus is flocked with men sucking up leaves with giant Hoovers. Fall is upon us in Philly – so continues the American Experience.
When I got the bus from Boston the other week I was with a Zimbabwean-come-Australian who claimed that he had never experienced seasons before. The roadside trees were impressive to my British-educated eyes but to him they were Mars. He was honestly otherwise quite normal but he filmed the majority of the journey on his phone. Awkwardly, the trip lasted 8 hours and I had the window seat.
I therefore do not feel as much of an outsider as some at this time of year, but Penn has still delivered a few surprises.
